Study of TCP and UDP Interaction for the AF PHB

چکیده
This informational draft presents results of a study on using different drop precedence assignments to address fairness issues when UDP and TCP traffic share the same Assured Forwarding (AF) PHB class. In particular, five different possible combinations of drop precedence assignment were explored with two different models of RED parameter settings. We present results showing that the type of RED model utilized can play a role in the nature of bandwidth sharing between TCP and UDP flows. The results also show that with the current four Class, three Drop Precedence AF specification, fairness between TCP and UDP in an under-provisioned network cannot be completely achieved by using separate drop precedence marking. Certain drop precedence mapping schemes are beneficial to TCP while others are beneficial for UDP. None are completely fair to both. The implementation of successful assured forwarding (AF) services according to the DiffServ framework remains a challenging problem today, despite the numerous proposals for assured forwarding per-hopbehaviour (AF PHB) mechanisms and AF-based service implementations. The interaction of the TCP and UDP traffic under an AF-based service and a number of relative issues such as fairness among flows...

There are two cruxes of issues identified in differentiated services (diffserv) networks: One is TCP dynamics over Assured Services, and the other is the interaction of TCP and UDP flows for Assured Forwarding Per Hop Behavior (PHB). Therefore, we argue unfair distribution of excess bandwidth in an over-provisioned networks as well as unfair degradation in an under-provisioned network for TCP a...

Much industry attention has recently been focused on providing differentiated levels of service to users on IP networks. One such proposal is the RIO scheme proposed by Clark [4]. RIO is an extension of the RED algorithm that relies on a differentiated drop treatment during congestion to cause different levels of service. The end result of differentiated dropping of packets during congestion is...
